Snap-on Diagnostics

What We Diagnose

If something on the dash is lit up or the vehicle is not acting right, this is where we start.

  • Check engine and warning lights. We read the codes, find out which system flagged the fault, then track down why it happened.
  • Electrical problems. A battery that keeps dying, or lights and accessories that cut out on their own.
  • Sensor faults. A sensor that has quit, or one sending bad readings because of a wiring or connection problem.
  • Running problems. A rough idle, hesitation when you step on the gas, or an engine that stalls.

Daily drivers, trucks and project builds all come through the same shop, and they all get the same Snap-on diagnostics and the same straight answer.

How We Work

A Code Is a Starting Point, Not the Answer

A code reader tells you which system flagged a fault. It does not always tell you why. That gap is where a lot of people end up paying for parts they never needed.

Say a cheap scan points at an oxygen sensor. The sensor might be bad. Or it might be reading exactly what it sees, and the real cause is an exhaust leak or a wiring fault. Swap the sensor without checking and the light can come right back on, and now you have paid for a part that did not fix anything.

So we test before we replace parts. We read the codes, check the system they point to, and confirm what is actually wrong. Then we tell you straight what we found before any work starts. As Chris M. put it in a Google review, we "always do a great job fixing only what needs to be fixed."

Check Engine Light

Steady or Flashing

How the light is behaving tells you a lot about how soon it needs looking at.

A steady light means the engine computer found a fault and stored a code. It is usually OK to drive to the shop, but book it soon. A small problem left alone can turn into a bigger one.

A flashing light usually means a bad misfire. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration, and get it looked at right away. A bad misfire can damage the catalytic converter, and that is a much bigger repair than the misfire itself.

This is general advice, not a diagnosis. The only way to know what the light means on your vehicle is to read the code and test. If something feels wrong and you are not sure whether to keep driving, call (250) 549-3133 and ask.

FAQ

Questions People Ask

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If the light is steady and the vehicle is driving normally, it is usually OK to drive it to the shop, but book it soon. If the light is flashing, ease off, avoid hard acceleration and get it looked at right away, because a bad misfire can damage the catalytic converter. If you are not sure, call (250) 549-3133 and ask.

How much does a diagnostic cost?

It depends on the problem. Call (250) 549-3133, tell us what the vehicle is doing, and we will give you a straight answer before any work starts.
